Job Description
The Principal Planner / Planning Manager is a senior role responsible for leading complex planning projects, providing strategic planning advice, and managing/mentoring junior members. You will play a key role in shaping development proposals, influencing planning panels, and ensuring that this organisations projects align with regulatory and sustainability objectives. This position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Advisory Role
Provide high-level planning advice to this organisation, stakeholders, and senior management on complex land use, zoning, and environmental matters. Interpret planning legislation and guide major development proposals through the planning system.
Project Leadership & Management
Lead and manage complex and high-value planning projects from inception to approval. Oversee the preparation and submission of planning applications, ensuring quality, compliance, and timely delivery.
Site Appraisals & Feasibility
Undertake and oversee detailed site assessments, evaluating development potential and identifying constraints such as flood risk, heritage considerations, and environmental designations.
Stakeholder & Client Management
Act as lead liaison for this organisation, to local authorities, and external stakeholders.
Represent this organisation at planning committees, public inquiries, and consultations, and manage sensitive negotiations.
Policy Development & Strategic Planning
Contribute to and influence local and regional planning. Support the preparation of this organisation strategic and development strategies aligned with objectives.
Community & Environmental Impact
Lead the assessment of development impacts on communities, infrastructure, and the environment. Provide strategic recommendations to mitigate risks and enhance positive outcomes.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
Manage and mentor junior team members, providing guidance, technical oversight, and performance support. Contribute to team development and resource planning.
Reporting & Documentation
Oversee and produce high-quality planning reports, statements, and documentation, including Environmental Impact Assessments and appeal statements.
Requirements
Qualifications & Requirements:
Degree in Town Planning, Urban Planning, or related field Optional
Chartered Member of the RTPI (or equivalent professional accreditation – or working towards)
Significant experience in a planning role (typically 5–10+ years)
Strong knowledge of UK planning legislation, policy, and procedures
Proven experience managing complex planning applications and appeals
